The greatest display of perseverance in PGA Tour historyAt the 1974 Tallahassee Open, Mike Reasor made the 36-hole cut with steady, composed golf. On Saturday morning before round three, an equestrian accident resulted in separated left shoulder ligaments, torn rib cartilage, and severe bodily trauma.
Under PGA Tour regulations at the time, withdrawing would have stripped Mike of his exemption status for the upcoming Byron Nelson Classic and Houston Open. Refusing to surrender his tour eligibility or abandon the competition, Reasor stepped onto the first tee with his left arm tucked inside his sweater and a single 5-iron in his right hand.
“He played all 36 weekend holes using only his right hand and a 5-iron for every single shot—drives, approaches, bunker splashes, and putts. He shot 123 and 114, finished all 72 holes, and earned the everlasting admiration of the golfing world.”
